GLD Apprenticeship Programmes 2026
Job Description
The Government Legal Department (GLD) provides legal services to the UK Government, advising on everything from high-profile judicial reviews to the drafting of new legislation. In 2026, the apprenticeship offerings have expanded to foster social diversity and provide direct pathways into the legal profession. These schemes enable individuals to transition from entry-level positions to fully qualified solicitors or operational managers within the Civil Service.
Positions Available
1. Solicitor Apprenticeship (Level 7)
A six-year “trailblazer” program designed for school leavers to qualify as solicitors without the financial burden of traditional university debt.
The Structure: Years 1–4 involve four days of work and one day of off-the-job training for an LLB (Hons). Years 5–6 focus on the SQE 1 & 2.
Salary (2026): Starts at approx. £32,000, rising to £34,000+ in the final two years.
2. Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship
A fast-track route for degree holders to qualify as solicitors within 30 to 36 months. This path bypasses the four-year degree phase and moves directly into SQE preparation and qualifying work experience.
3. Business Administrator (Level 3)
The primary entry point for legal operations. Leads to a permanent Administrative Officer (AO) role upon completion of the 18-month program.
The Role: Acting as a “Case Progression Officer,” managing court bundles, and providing logistics for legal teams.
