Experience Leadership at the Highest Level

The British Army Officer Internship (often called the Gap Year Commission) isn’t your typical desk job. This is a 12-month immersion into the world of elite military leadership. Whether you are taking a break before university, looking for a challenge during your studies, or have recently graduated, this program puts you in a position of responsibility from day one.

In 2026, this remains a high-priority route for young leaders. You will be trained at the world-renowned Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, gaining management experience that civilian employers hold in the highest regard.

Positions & Placements

You will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant for the duration of your service. While you are not sent into frontline combat, you are fully integrated into a regular Army unit. You can express interest in various corps, including:

  • Infantry & Armoured Corps (Tactical leadership)
  • Royal Engineers (Technical and logistical planning)
  • Intelligence Corps (Analysis and security)
  • Royal Logistic Corps (Supply chain and management)

Cities & Total Vacancies

Location: UK-Wide & Overseas. While your Phase 1 training is in Camberley (Sandhurst), your 10-month unit attachment can be at various bases across the UK.

Overseas: You may participate in exercises in Kenya, Canada, or the Falkland Islands.

Vacancies: The Army maintains a competitive but steady intake for this cycle; however, specific “headcount” numbers are not publicly fixed, as selection is based strictly on meeting the AOSB (Army Officer Selection Board) merit standard.

Requirements & Qualifications

We set a high bar for our interns. To join, you must meet the following:

  • Education: A minimum of 72 UCAS points (from A-levels or equivalent).
  • ALIS Points: 35 ALIS points from GCSEs (including a C/4 or above in English, Maths, and a Science or Foreign Language).
  • Student Status: You must have a confirmed university place or have graduated within the last 24 months.
  • Fitness: You must pass the Army’s physical assessment. If you can’t run a mile or hit the push-up requirements yet, now is the time to start training.
  • Suitability: Success at the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB) is mandatory.

Salary & Benefits

This is a professional role with professional pay. Starting Salary is approximately Β£23,084, which scales up to Β£34,676 during your Sandhurst training period.

  • Time Off: A generous 38 days of annual leave.
  • “Army Life” Perks: Enjoy free medical and dental care, heavily subsidized housing, and full access to military gyms and sports teams.
  • Adventure: Access to “Adventurous Training” (think skiing, mountaineering, and sailing) is part of the job.

Application Process & Timeline

The road to Sandhurst takes time. Don’t leave your application until the last minute.

  • Register Interest: Apply online. For a September 2026 start, you should aim to submit by December 2025.
  • Selection Boards: You will undergo medicals and the AOSB selection process in early 2026.
  • Insight Day (Highly Recommended): Attend the Officer Insight Day at RMAS on March 14, 2026. It’s the best way to see the academy firsthand.
  • Training Begins: Phase 1 training (8-9 weeks) kicks off in September 2026 at Sandhurst.
